Oman LNG Boat Wins First Place in Traditional “Mashwah” Rowing Race in Sur

The curtain came down Friday evening on the highly anticipated “Mashwah” traditional boat race in the Wilayat of Sur, organized by the Omani Marine Sports Association and proudly sponsored by the Oman Liquefied Natural Gas Company (Oman LNG). The event featured strong competition and a vibrant public turnout along the coastal stretch.

A total of 11 traditional rowing boats participated in the race, representing various clubs and national institutions including Sur, Al-Oruba, and Al-Tali’aa clubs, as well as boats from Oman LNG, Sur Healthy City Project, Fakhr Al-Bihar, Yashar Wadd Hassoun, Matili’, Fakhr Al-Bihar Engineering, and Al-Qasa’em.

The race spanned a distance of 6 kilometers, starting from the “Rasagh” area near Sur Beach Resort and concluding at the entrance of Khor Al-Batah on the Sur Corniche. Spectators lined the shores to cheer on the teams from the starting signal to the finish line.

Oman LNG’s team claimed first place, showcasing unity, skill, and sportsmanship in a race that highlighted the spirit of traditional maritime competition.

The event was accompanied by various cultural and maritime activities, including traditional Omani folk performances, kite flying, and a notable contribution from Oman Sail School, which added an educational and interactive touch to the event.

Additionally, a fishing enthusiasts’ exhibition was held, displaying both traditional and modern fishing tools, rare photographs, and scale models representing the rich history of marine life and fishing heritage in Oman. This added a deeper cultural and educational dimension to the day’s activities.

Organizers emphasized that the event is part of a broader effort to revive and preserve Oman’s rich maritime heritage, which traditional boats symbolize. These vessels have historically played crucial roles in coastal communities—serving in fishing, trade, and transportation—and continue to represent national pride and identity.

The race was well-coordinated with support from the Royal Oman Police, the General Directorate of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in South Al Sharqiyah, and other supporting entities to ensure the smooth operation of the event.

In closing, participants and organizers expressed their gratitude to all supporting parties, stressing the importance of continuing such initiatives that strengthen national identity and community cohesion through cultural and sporting heritage.
